When I
read the following excerpt from Michael Masterson...I couldn't have
agreed more with what he said.
You see, I use to be afraid to write, in fear of making a mistake, in
fear of someone finding fault in what I wrote, in fear of someone just
focusing in on any and all of my mistakes that I may have made and
still make.
Then I woke up one day and decided that all that doesn't matter much.
What does matter is what's in your heart and what value you
may be able to add to another persons life by going after your dreams.
I highly recommend
Ready, Fire,
Aim to anyone and everyone.
"Bob Dylan wrote some really bad lyrics. I found this out recently
by reading
through a large collection of them.
If you knew
Dylan only by his better-known songs, you might
think he had
a natural genius for songwriting. But it is impossible
to read
through 100 of his lyrics and maintain that impression.
Dylan’s
greatness as a songwriter is not that he is a once-in-a-
million
talent, but that he was willing to write lots of bad and
mediocre
songs in order to write some really good ones.
I remember
hearing a presentation by Amy Tan (author of The Joy
Luck Club)
many years ago. She appeared at a fiction-writing
retreat I
attended. Instead of reading us some of her best writing,
the way most
writers would, she shared some of her early stuff,
which was
remarkably bad. It made me and many of the other
novice
writers in the audience feel very good.
If she could
be that bad and then get so much better, we figured, so
could we!
There is a
very important lesson to be learned here. You should
never be
afraid to work on developing a skill simply because your
first efforts
are disappointing."
